Coaching has been a passion with me since high school days back in 1976 when I began my gymnastic training. After being awarded a scholarship in 1980 to Indiana University for Men's Varsity Gymnastics, I later joined the U.S. Navy and was fortunate to travel around the entire globe, I returned to civilian life in Florida and found myself coaching again in the evenings. I coached at Broadway Gymnastics in Oviedo, Florida (www.broadwaygymnastics.com) under the direction of Rich Masters, a well recognized trainer in the Central Florida area who now operates and owns a very successful gym in Orlando, www.reflexgymnastics.net. My tenure at Broadway resulted in my team participating in the national Junior Olympics competition held in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1995.
Recently when an opportunity came about for me to trade in my corporate suit for a comfortable gym suit, the decision was an easy one. Thanks to Joe Johnson, owner of ALLSTAR Panthers gym at Johns Creek in Alpharetta, Georgia, (www.thepantherlair.com), I have been given the opportunity to create a new program, Trampoline and Tumbling (TnT). Effective September 2009, ALLSTAR TnT became the first USTA/AAU program in the state of Georgia. TnT has been steadily growing across the country in the past few years, although still sparsely offered in Georgia, and Joe shared my vision to bring this sport to life in North Georgia. The benefits of trampoline and tumbling are many: It is almost indispensable for those who wish to advance into acrobatics; is excellent foundation training for cheerleading; exercises, tones and strengthens every muscle in the body; promotes good coordination; stimulates circulation; is a great aid in developing good motor skills; is therapeutic for muscular problems; and helps to develop confidence. Most of all, it is just plain fun, and a sport that anyone from five to ninety-five can enjoy.
And mothers, T&T is a great release for kids with nervous energy, and what kid doesn't have that? I have a pre-teenage daughter who gets energy-loaded at times, and since she loves to turn cartwheels and somersaults, a good workout in TnT does the trick. It has also sparked her interest in cheer leading and gymnastics. Jumping on trampolines and tumbling on mats may look like something that needs little instruction, but contrary to this misconception, they are very disciplined sports which require special skills and regimented teaching and supervision. Learning the right movements is crucial, both for safety's sake, and/or advancement to higher sports training. I look forward to pouring my heart and soul into this sport which I love, as well as expanding this agenda in Georgia. I invite you to take a look at some of the videos I've put together so you can see for yourself how stimulating this sport really is.
